Following the introductory workshop on the PSSI architectural inventory methodology, architecture students from Universitas Sebelas Maret (UNS) joined the Kota Kita team for a hands-on field exercise in Semanggi Block 1.
As part of the Architectural Research Methodology course, the students had the opportunity to apply the methods introduced during the previous knowledge-sharing session. The field visit began with a guided walk through the neighbourhood, during which the Kota Kita team introduced the settlement, discussed its housing conditions, and highlighted the climate adaptation measures developed by residents in response to local environmental challenges.
Working alongside the research team, the students contributed to the architectural inventory by supporting interviews with residents and documenting housing characteristics. They recorded interview responses, measured buildings, sketched floor plans and building features, and documented the incremental adaptations and climate-responsive modifications implemented by households. The collected data will now be organised, reviewed, and entered into the project's database as part of the research process.
In the coming weeks, the students will also carry out architectural inventories in neighbourhoods where the government housing improvement programme has been implemented. Their findings will be presented to the PSSI research team and compared with the project's data from organically developed settlements. This exchange will provide valuable insights into how different development pathways—community-driven incremental housing and government-led upgrading programmes—shape housing conditions and climate adaptation practices.
Through this collaboration, the PSSI project continues to strengthen the exchange between research, teaching, and practice while supporting the next generation of architects in developing field-based research skills and a deeper understanding of incremental urban development.
